TEXT FOR READING AND TRANSLATION

Runways

The runways at an airport are designated according to the compass bearings rounded off to the nearest 10 degrees, with the final zero omitted. For example, a runway which faces almost due west (say 266°) would be rounded off to 270° and described as ‘Runway 27’. The same runway, used in the opposite direction, will be facing due east and will differ by 180°, that is 090°. It will be then described as ‘Runway 09’. Where two parallel runways are available, as at Heathrow, they are known as ‘left’ and ‘right’ respectively. Occasionally, knowledge of individual runways is helpful to airband listeners, especially where only the aircraft radio transmissions can be heard, since one of the clues to the destination may be the ‘runway-in-use’ quoted by the controller. Hearing the words ’Willow one Bravo arrival for two six’ identifies the destination as Gatwick, because Gatwick’s runways are designated 26 and 08, and ‘Willow’ is a reporting point on the arrival route.

TEXT FOR READING AND TRANSLATION

Approach Control

Approach control can be situated at the aerodrome or at some other site. Normally, if there are two aerodromes in the vicinity, there will be one approach control unit to cover them both. The approach controller’s main task is to provide separation to departing and arriving aircraft operating under instrument flight rules. The approach controller takes over the control of an arriving aircraft from the airways controller and hands over the aircraft to the control tower. For departing aircraft the procedure is reversed.

When airports are very busy the approach controller may stack the aircraft at different levels so that each may descend in turn towards the airport. In such cases the approach controller usually gives aircraft their expected approach time. Because of their high fuel consumption at low levels, jet aircraft and, particularly, supersonic aircraft, prefer to remain at higher altitudes before starting their descent.

CLASS ‘A’ & CLASS ‘B’ AIRSPACE IN THE UK

Class ‘A’ controlled airspace consists mainly of corridors of protected space (known as airways) which enable public transport aircraft to route across the country with the benefit of a continuous control service' usually aided by radar, in which ground controllers assume responsibility for the safe separation of the various flights within the region. The controllers issue instructions by radio telephone to the pilots of aircraft inside the airways and those instructions have the force of law. Aircraft are not permitted to enter controlled airspace unless they are provided with certain navigational and identification facilities. Prior permission to fly in controlled airspace is also a requirement; this is normally achieved by informing the ATC authorities of the intentions of the flight by means of a Flight Plan.

Airspace around London Heathrow and Manchester is also Class ‘A’ airspace.

Class ‘B’ airspace consists of airspace other than airways or TMAs in which pilots are required to comply with certain rules. Class ‘B’ airspace in the UK covers all airspace above FL245, (approximately 24,500ft) in which aircraft are subject to a full and mandatory control service.

UNIT 6

RADAR

Radar is used at each control suite to monitor the progress of flights. The radar screen displays a map of the airways and reporting points for the particular sector, plus, of course, the position of aircraft within radar range. In addition, aircraft equipped with a transponder are interrogated by a radio signal for an identification ‘squawk’, which is then shown alongside the aircraft position. The identify ‘label’ shows the aircraft callsign, height and destination on the radar display. The radar receiving stations, and the VHF radio transmitters, are located in various parts of the UK, the signals being passed between the centre and the remote stations by land line.

Radar and radio transmissions are continuously recorded and held for a period of 30 days in case there is any need for investigation of any particular incident.

The systems and technology in use today for air traffic control are highly copmlex and sophisticated.

When a radar service is not available, pilots can request a ‘procedural’ (non-radar) service, in which pilots are provided with standard separation details based on the information given by pilots on positions and levels.
